E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N Review

E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N

E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N RTF

Our reveiw:

E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N RTFFirst, let's face it the scale McDonnell Douglas 520N (NOTAR) fuselage with the police scheme is outstanding and is a perfect choice since co-axial have no need for a tail rotor. The NOTAR (no tail rotor) helicopter like the real MD-520N is an ideal selection. The E-Flight experts have done it again and definitely given us a winner.

As with all of E-Flite Blades, the E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N comes very securely packaged inside of nested foam.

The heli sports some amazing scale details. Check out the optional transmitter activated navigation light package (sold separately).

E-Flite Blade CX3 MD 520N RTFDetails on the CX3 fuselage is amazing! From the foot pegs on the landing struts to the fluting on the horizontal and vertical stabilizer fins, E-Flite has gone all out. Including 4 pre-drilled holes to accommodate the optional LED light kit. Overall, an excellent scale job!

The CX3 looks remarkable. It's surprising how a micro-heli can carry this amount of detail. And have this kind of scale finish that is applied on the inside of the polycarbonate fuselage, it gives it a remarkable depth and shine. The slightly tinted grey/bronze windows really helps top the overall scale look.

The radio system supplied with the CX3 is the 2.4GHz DSM2 spread spectrum technology. This benefits give us interference-free flying with immediate and precise control response. Being a true RTF, all you have to do is add 4 AA batteries to the transmitter.

The only weak spot we noticed is the foot pegs on the landing struts, they are easy to break-off but are not needed for flight.

Needed to complete:
Nothing - everything is included.

Kit Includes
The MD 520N Coaxial RC helicopter - set up and test flown
A quality DC balancing charger
A 800 mAh 2 cell 7.4V Li-Po battery
Advanced 3 in 1 control unit controls the lift, mixing of rotors for yaw control, Heading Hold Gyro.
Lightweight Spektrum AR6100e receiver with DSM2 technology
Two feather light S60 Super Sub-Micro servos (6 grams each)

Our setup for this heli:

A few minor adjustments to the proportional control and we're set.

Assembly:
No assembly is required! Well ok, I did have to insert the battery.

Flying the E-Flite Blade CX3 MD-520N:
With the battery charged, controls checked and range check done, it is time to fly. We put the E-Flite Blade CX3's MD-520N through it's paces, forwards, backwards, sideways - any and everything we could think of and it performed flawlessly.

The CX3 is super stable with a very solid hover, its almost too easy.

Try it, while moving forward release the sticks and it will settle down into a stable hover all on its own.

Gyro:
The gyro was a pleasant surprise, the Blade CX3 maintained orientation forwards, backwards or sideways without the typical weather veining found in most coaxial helicopters.

Wind:
Well, don't go there. While it will fly in light wind, it will have to fight to make it back to you!

Conditions:

Indoor arena
75 degrees
No winds

Conclusions:

E-Flite Blade CX3 MD-520N is a very stable and smooth flying helicopter.

The tail is more lively than its predecessor the CX2 making it feel more solid with a crisper feel to the tail. It handles much like the CX2, only smoother.

Overall the Blade CX3 is a pleasure to fly both indoors and outside in calm wind. It does take some adjustment for those of us that fly fixed wing airplanes or collective-pitch heli's.

Very recommended, another Blade that is ideal for the novice or the beginner.

Clear skies & Good flying!
Robert
